Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
