Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Fighters Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a colorful mix of heroes, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within the urban setting.

Warning: Key plot points for the latest installment of the new season follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The latest chapter ended with a huge suspense moment and introduced the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to undertake their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team includes the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Considering 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before branching into three smaller tables: Fighters, Planners, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven story mode where diplomatic options are scarce.

Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might seem unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 make it clear why these five characters are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party understands precisely where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose death initiated the campaign’s events—used the foes for his selfish purposes, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The traitor then cleared his obligations and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, above the urban center, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each member has a individual motive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and best friend, wants retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and warns that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having resisted his house’s orders to kill Teor and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as key figures in the influential clan could help the team reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The fighter swore a eternal obligation to The cleric for his salvation and will now go with him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are hunted by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and Wicander defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to Timmony in search of Casimir.

Future Episodes

According to the recent installment’s Cooldown, we discover that the warrior group won’t be around the following episode, leaving the rest of the participants to round up the Explorers and Planners tables.

Fans can expect discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
