Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
